Agro-biotechnology

Overview

Nowadays, biotechnology is one of the main branches of scientific and technological development. This Master programme is connected with biotechnology by means of modules dealing with agriculture. This programme brings together aspects of methodological and fundamental knowledge which are conducive to the comprehension of biotechnology techniques applied in agriculture. Also, the focus is placed on the relationship between plants and their environment.

Within the field of Agro-biotechnology a large number of techniques have been implemented. Such procedures range from the culture of plant tissues and their clonal propagation to genetic engineering of plants and micro-organisms. Agro-biotechnology is beneficial to farmers and consumers in that it enhances agricultural production and facilitates the provision of products used for different purposes: pharmecautical, enviromental, food, agriculture and cosmetics. There are two elements that prove the vital importance of biotechnology in our lives. Firstly, the provision of better quality food aims to eradicate hunger in wide areas of Asia, Africa and Latin America. Secondly, sustainable economic growth is based on the awareness of the effects of human activities over the world's biological and geo-climatological diversity.
