Today we are immersed in an information society. It is a society in which information is power. All this is true: data files are bought and sold between companies, because they can obtain lists of potential customers, to whom they offer a personal loan, a trip to the Caribbean or a plasma TV. Although we are not aware of it, all of this information is embedded in the data that we give when opening a bank account, paying with a card at the supermarket or at gas station, or when taking out a mortgage.
Continually, often without realising it, we are making and driving statistics: when we speak of the average wage, or hear of the latest election polls or pediatricians telling us the average height and weight in percentiles that our newborns should be. Statistics are everywhere, because today information comes from all over the world. And someone has to analyse this, extract the information that it contains and then use it to improve the running of factories, hospitals, banks, etc. This person is a statistician.
The Undergraduate Degree in Statistics is designed to transform students into statisticians, to work in any branch of experimental sciences, in all kinds of businesses, or even as state officials. During the four years students will learn the main statistical techniques, as well as the most appropriate procedure to apply in each situation. 90% of the degree holders in statistics find work within 3 months, although some prefer to continue studying to acheive a better training, and some of these even choose to do a masters or a doctorate. Some statisticians decide to work as lecturers, others as researchers in universities... there are many occupations that a Statistician can do!
