Undergraduate Degree Studies in Hebrew and Aramaic Studies
Overview
The Undergraduate Degree in Hebrew and Aramaic Studies will be taught simultaneously with another 9 degrees in the Faculty of Philology:
- Undergraduate Degree in German Studies
- Undergraduate Degree in Arabic and Islamic Studies
- Undergraduate Degree in Classical Philology Studies
- Undergraduate Degree in French Studies
- Undergraduate Degree Studies in Hebrew and Aramaic Studies
- Undergraduate Degree in Hispanic Philology
- Undergraduate Degree in English Studies
- Undergraduate Degree in Italian Studies
- Undergraduate Degree in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies
- Undergraduate Degree in Languages, Literature and Roman Culture
All of the degrees share core modules in the first two years. Therefore they share all the basic cross-training, all the basic philological classes (Second Language, General Linguistics, Literary Theory, etc.) and a common catalogue of elective subjects with general and introductory content. In this way students can design their curriculum to suit their own interests by combining the various possibilities offered in the first two years. For example they can choose a list of subjects that will give their degree a more linguistic, literary or cultural aspect. For these same reasons it facilitates the transfer of credits among the various degrees.
The introduction of this degree will continue to improve the humanities links at the University of Salamanca with the study of Hebrew and Aramaic, which has been present in this institution since the first half of the XV century through the Trilingual department (Hebrew, Aramaic and Arabic). This Undergraduate Degree offers rigorous training in the knowledge of the Hebrew and Aramaic languages and their cultures, from their earliest linguistic and literary stages right through to the present day. This degree also provides the possibilty to study other Semitic languages. The creation of this degree is in responce to the rising interest in our society of the historical and literary foundations of the Bible, socio-religious traditions of the Jewish people and their cultural legacy in Spain and elsewhere in Europe.
